The story of women's suffrage in the late part of the 19th Century and early 20th Century is the centerpiece of women's equality in the United States.  We wanted to tell this story in a visceral way that visitors could easily connect to.  It was the marching of the Suffragists in 1913 that really got the attention of the nation.  What, we asked, were they wearing on their feet to do all this marching?   A small collection of turn of the century shoes and boots, clothing of the time, political buttons, sashes, pamphlets and other paraphernalia help to tell the story of this exhibit. Rounding out the visual elements includes a letter from Susan B. Anthony to California Suffragist, Alice Park whose archives we have in our collection.
