ROCKIN' THE BOAT: WOMEN'S LIBERATION MOVEMENT OF THE 60'S AND 70'S

The second wave of feminism in the 1960s and 1970s, known as the Women's Liberation Movement, came fast on the heels of the Civil Rights Movement. This wave of activism in pursuit of women's rights encompassed a wide range of issues: sexuality, family, workplace, and reproductive rights as well as social, political, economic, and legal inequalities. Rights that most women take for granted today were hard fought--by women, for women. In this exhibit, we salute and honor those tenacious women who carried the torch for equality, justice, and freedom.

Through activism and advocacy, women increasingly pushed their way into the professions, military, media, nontraditional jobs, and sports. Proponents of second-wave feminism also engaged in a battle against gender-based violence by proposing marital rape legislation and the establishment of rape crisis and battered women's shelters. They also promoted changes in laws related to economic equality, child custody, and divorce.

Many historians view this era of phenomenal activism as ending in the early 1980s with the intra-feminism disputes of the Feminist Sex wars over such issues as sexuality and pornography. The political climate in the U.S. of the 1980s also became less receptive to "women's liberation." Without support, the Women's Movement lay fallow until the eruption of third-wave feminism in the early 1990s, but that is another story waiting to be told.
