Message From WMC Director Felicia Shaw

As 2022 draws to a close, I want to express my appreciation for your continuing support of the Women’s Museum of California. Through our many educational programs, you helped us bring to life the untold stories of diverse women and their contributions to society. You helped us create a new museum where everyone feels welcomed and included. Every day –  in every way – your participation mattered.

When I joined the Museum in 2020 as Executive Director, I knew that reinventing a cultural institution like ours, with cherished traditions and a long history of community service, would be challenging. Even the tiniest ships are tough to turn around. But with the ink on my contract barely dry, the pandemic hit, shuttering our doors, and making my job that much harder. Undeterred, I did what women do when faced with adversity – slipped off my heels, put on some comfortable shoes, and got to work!

Three years later, thanks to the generosity of dozens of donors, the hard work of a dedicated board of directors, a tiny-but-mighty administrative staff, and dozens of energetic volunteers, the Museum has prevailed – with many milestone moments along the way.

We moved our business office and archive to the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park. We renovated and opened our new Education Center in southeast San Diego where we mounted our first in-person exhibit since the pandemic. We launched our new Women’s Equality Day Festival, started a feminist library and book exchange, and welcomed dozens of students from area schools for workshops on women’s history. All this we accomplished, and so much more!

While this new era for our organization is just beginning, I am sad to share that my tenure with the Museum is ending. As I complete my three-year contract on December 31 and step down from my role as Executive Director, I leave with a full heart – satisfied with all I helped accomplish and ready for my next big adventure.

Standing at the start of our 40th anniversary, I look forward to witnessing how the Museum will continue to lead in the march toward women’s equality. I intend to stay connected to the Museum in meaningful ways and be a part of its bright future. So, I say goodbye for now, but never farewell.

An announcement regarding the appointment of the new Executive Director for the Women’s Museum of California and news of my next career move will come in early 2023. Until then, have a happy holiday season with friends and family. Stay safe and well.

With gratitude,

Felicia Shaw
